What is Culinary Tourism?

Culinary tourism covers any tourism experience that encourages learning, appreciating and/or consuming food and drink that reflects a local, regional, or national cuisine, heritage, culture, tradition or culinary techniques. Rooted in cultural discovery, culinary tourism is linked to ag-tourism, rural tourism, and urban tourism. Also viewed as exploratory eating, culinary tourism encourages individuals to explore new foods and use food as a way to explore new cultures. Culinary tourism is an ‘experiential trip to a gastronomic region for recreational or entertainment purposes, which includes visits to the following: primary and secondary producers of food, gastronomic festivals, food fairs, events, farmers’ markets, cooking shows and demonstrations or any other tourism activity related to food.’
