Jasper Brewing Co. proudly opened its doors in the spring of 2005 as Canada’s first National Park Brewery. Three of the founders are born and raised Jasper locals, who passionately pursued creating beers that truly reflected the beauty of their hometown. 10 years later “the brewpub” has become a community hub that focuses on developing well-crafted beer and Alberta-inspired cuisine for locals and tourists alike.
Childhood friends Brett Ireland, Socrates Korogonas, and Alex Derksen have always shared a passion for food and beer. All three had extensive experience in the food and beverage business in Jasper, Alberta. So it was natural that they launch their first brewpub in this mountain town. Taking their inspiration from the town’s own unique beer culture, they opened the Jasper Brewing Company in 2005. This marked the first brewpub in a Canadian national park. From there, the passion grew. In 2010, they opened their second brewpub, Banff Avenue Brewing in Banff. By then it was clear they were on to something. They formed the umbrella company of Bearhill Brewing Company in 2012. Expansion continued with the opening of Wood Buffalo Brewing in Fort McMurray in 2013. Finally, Last Best Brewing and Distillery opened its doors in Calgary in the summer of 2014.
Each brewpub maintains Brett and his buddies’ philosophy that beer should always have a sense of place. Their beers are all made from carefully selected local ingredients. A base component for them is the “sea of barley” that grows in Southern Alberta. Bearhill’s brewers believe this grain is truly the best in the world. While each pub has its mainstays, master brewers are constantly developing seasonal beers, made from innovative combinations of local flavours.
Last Best Brewing and Distilling is taking the Calgary beverage scene to a new level. Besides producing several craft beers, Last Best is now developing a full range of rum, rye, bourbon, gin, and single malt whiskey. Last Best was born out of the pioneering attitude of early settlers to Alberta. At the turn of the 19th century, the Canadian government began a campaign they called the “Last Best West” initiative. Marketed to Europeans, the prairies were offered as a “last best” chance to own land and create a future for themselves.
Likewise, the founders of Bearhill Brewing Company believe that Alberta is the best place to brew beers of distinction in a budding craft-brew market. Visit them at their four locations throughout Alberta.
