Barr Estate Winery began as a family business in 2009. Born out of a passion for hand-crafted fruit wines, the winery was set up just outside of Sherwood Park, Alberta by Rick and Amy Barr. They partnered with Amy’s parents, Mike and Jeanette Cholowsky. Both Rick and Amy had spent 20 years in heart research at the University of Alberta. They decided to apply their years of scientific training to the art of wine.
Amy had a history of farming on her side. Her family homesteaded in the county of Strathcona two generations earlier. Amy’s Grandfather began growing raspberries on his farm. Eventually, Jeanette was able to cultivate some of these well-established plants. Soon the farm had thousands of these heritage-based raspberry plants. These family-grown plants are what goes into Barr Estate Winery’s fruit wines today.
They produce two wines. Their white is “The Barb” made from rhubarb. They use only red rhubarb which gives the wine a slight pink tinge. Their red is simply “The Other Red” which is made from their family heritage raspberries. These raspberries are picked at the height of ripeness. This ensures a fruit-forward, medium-bodied wine.
The philosophy at Barr Estate Winery is to be “true to the fruit”. All their fruit is hand-picked. The winery does not use any herbicides or pesticides. True stewards of the land, this family believes in sustainable wine making practices. They employee a small herd of sheep to “weed” the property. The sheep in turn offer natural fertilizer to continue the organic process. In the winery, Rick and Amy apply cool fermentation to their wines. This process helps retain the intensity of fruit on the nose and palate. They bottle their wines without the use of any fining agents. They use no sorbate or sulphites in their wines.
