Alley Kat Brewing Company has been creating award winning beers since 1995. They are the fourth longest running brewery in Alberta, celebrating their 20th year in business this year. They are also Edmonton’s oldest micro-brewery.
Alley Kat Brewing Company is owned and operated by Neil and Lavonne Herbst of Edmonton. Neil took his experience as an employee in the Government of Alberta liquor business and poured into his passion for micro-brewing. He knew the demands of the local market, and saw an opportunity to launch a truly home-grown beer made with local customer satisfaction in mind.
Neil, Lavonne, and their team believe that less is more when it comes to craft beer. They have built their business slowly and deliberately, developing a passionate following within the city of Edmonton. Most of Alley Kat’s ingredients are locally sourced. A select few specialty grains are acquired from other parts of the world.
Today, the brewery has an annual brewing capacity of 8,300 hectolitres. That’s 2.4 million bottles of beer. Alley Kat has maintained a core group of five beers. At the same time, they continue to push the microbrew envelope with their Limited Runs 650ml format bottles. Over the years, the brewery has produced over 30 unique and exciting session ales in the larger format.
The folks at Alley Kat Brewing believe in being responsible members of the community. After the brewing process, all leftover grain product is recycled and used for local cattle feed. They use no preservatives or stabilizers. And none of their beers are pasteurized. It takes a lot of hot water to brew good beer. All excess hot water Alley Kat uses is captured and reused within the brewery. The brewery also reuses its bottles. These bottles are used up to 20 times before being recycled.
Alley Kat Brewing Company is always eager to share their love of beer with others. Tours are available Thursdays at 4pm and Fridays at 3pm. Call to book a time.
