When it comes to craft beers with lots of depth and taste, Something Brewing is definitely, well, something. First launched in October of 2014, Something Brewing is a fairly recent business. Technically, it is not a brewery, but Drummond Brewing’s newest craft arm in Red Deer. Just like Drummond, Something Brewing hosts friendly staff members serving complex craft beers able to satisfy any customer.

The masterminds behind these businesses share a passion for craft beers that translates well in to their products. Prior to becoming co-owners, Kevin Wood and Cody Geddes-Backman have an extensive history in working and volunteering for several other breweries and beer businesses, both in Canada and the United States. Their decision to begin their own brewery seemed like common sense – they both love beer and they both love business, hence, they create their own beer business.

Out of all the areas they worked in, the pair decided that Red Deer was the most ideal place to build Drummond Brewing for two reasons. First, its central location in Alberta brought it close to markets in both Edmonton and Calgary. Second, the Red Deer River would provide easy access to a natural water source and add to the brews’ flavours. The boys take advantage of other local resources as well. Wood claims that they buy the best barley in the province from Rahr Malting in the village of Alix.

This barley and water as well as other ingredients are included in Something Brewing’s creations, such as Hop Bomb, a very hoppy and fruity beer made with an actual bomb, or a sealed vessel that the hops are lowered in to. Also included on the menu is Gimme That Nutt, which is an American style brown ale with hazelnut and earthy hops giving it a biscuit-like flavour, and a rich black German lager with lots of chocolate and coffee flavour named Schwarzbier.

Wood and Geddes-Backman host an open brewery. Without any entry fee, they provide tours on request and maintain a positive atmosphere throughout Drummond Brewing and Something Brewing. Their hospitality and their exceptional brews makes Red Deer a worthwhile stop as you travel through Alberta.
