It was on a trip to Portland that Situation Brewing founders Wayne Sheridan and Kale Edwards discovered the exciting world of beer culture. They return to their hometown of Edmonton with the vision of creating a beer destination for the local scene. For Wayne, the passion for craft beer came from the art of homebrewing. After years of enjoying the fruits of his own labour, he wondered what it would take to commercialize his product. He considered the idea of a simple small brewing operation, offering small batch beer to local businesses. But he and his partners wanted to offer more to the local community; a place where folks could come together over a pint and a bite to eat and share in the experience of beer culture that was so popular in other cities.
Location informs everything they do, from sourcing local ingredients to reflecting the tastes of their customers, while offering them exciting brews from well beyond their city limits. Even their name, “Situation” refers to where they are situated. Along with brewmaster Matt Cockle, Wayne and Kale found a former second-hand bookstore just off trendy Whyte Avenue. They soon began the arduous task of installing tanks, fermenters and precision equipment, building a 250,000 hectolitre brewery from the ground up. On the other side of the business, the owners began refurbishing a space that would become their 90 seat, full service restaurant.
Situation Brewing is dedicated to the art of small batch brewing of innovative craft beer, with broad appeal. For the owners, it all begins with connecting locally to farmers, suppliers and even other breweries. Each beer starts with locally sourced, sustainable ingredients; from their smooth and straightforward “Easy Does It Cream Ale”, to their flagship beer, the “Page Turner IPA”.
The family-friendly restaurant offers a non-traditional take on the usual pub grub. Start with their beer mussels and move onto their home-made perogies. Enjoy their “Angry Bison” burger or Medieval Chicken. With clean brushed metal and warm wood, the comfortable, inviting space has a full view of the brewing facility. Nothing is off limits. Visitors are welcome to take a tour of the brewing facility and learn about the fascinating process of craft beer brewing. You can even take a workshop yourself and learn how to brew your own batch.
