Canmore Brewing Company founder Brian Dunn has had a passion for craft beer since he was of legal drinking age. His four older brothers teased him relentlessly for not drinking cheap beer and wasting his money on the “fancy stuff”. In the fall of 2014, after leaving his job as a mechanical engineer, Brian decided to spend more time doing the things he loved. Long bike rides and time with family inspired him to follow his passions - one of which was brewing beer. He bought a professional, 50 litre brew system, and began creating small batches. Friends and neighbours loved the results. Encouraged by the feedback, Brian decided to make brewing beer his new career. He wrote the business plan and found a partner, long time friend and fellow engineer Marc Gagne, in March of 2016. Together, the two of them searched a site for the brewery. They knew they wanted to be a local brewery in the heart of town, rather than in an industrial area. They wanted to be part of the dynamic, active, caring community that is Canmore. They found the perfect spot, minutes away from downtown. They set to work, partnering with local trades people in the construction and installation of equipment. Their doors finally opened in January of 2017.

The founders of the brewery celebrate their community and sense of place. It is reflected in the company’s philosophy. “Think outside. There is no box”. This is a reference to their beer, available only in 4-pack cans with no additional “boxed” packaging. It also reflects the group’s personal message to encourage people to think outside, get outside, explore the glorious beauty of Canmore and its majestic mountain environment.

All of their beer is made with pure Rocky Mountain water. The majority of their grain comes from Canadian farmers. They collaborate with local businesses whenever possible. Their first sessional beer incorporated coffee from a local company, RAVE coffee, to produce a smooth, coffee brown ale. The names of the beers also reflect the locality and community spirit that drives the brewery. Each brew is named after well know Bow Valley landmarks, from the Ten Peaks Pale Ale to the Mineside Stout.

The brewery is proud to share not only their beer but their knowledge of craft brewing. They encourage visitors to come down for a tour and taste during regular business hours.
