Co-founders Andrew Bullied and Erica O’Gorman came by their love for craft beer honestly, having participated in the industry in one way or another for many years prior to starting Annex Ale Project.   Andrew spent the early part of his career honing his skill for creating unconventional craft beers at Village Brewery, while Erica’s role as head chef for Village Ice Cream lead her to develop a passion for small business.  Both gained an appreciation for quality over quantity, focused experimentation, and the power of great ingredients and great ideas.  Having been inspired by craft beer culture in cities like Vancouver, Portland, and Seattle, Andrew and Erica decided to pursue their dream of growing a brewery from the ground up.  Annex Ale Project was created with a mission of developing new and creative North American-style beers that could define the brewery as an innovative player in the exploding Calgary craft beer community.

The two designed and built out a 3,600 square-foot community hub in Calgary’s industrial neighbourhood of Manchester.  With close proximity to transit and bike paths, the Annex tap room is an easy escape from the hectic downtown core, while still maintaining an urban and connected feel.  The tap room itself is casual, airy, and inviting, showcasing a sleek black bar set against a white wooden backdrop.  During tap room hours, pints are often poured by Andrew and Erica themselves, and the beers are available in bottles or for growler fills to take home.  Erica, having studied at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, has also used her background in food to curate a small but interesting snack menu, featuring locally made Hop Chips and Mediterranean salty string cheese. There are no TVs, no pool tables, and no distractions.  With a view into the brewery, the space is a unique community hub, perfect for enjoying interesting beer and great conversation.

On any given day in the tap room, the Annex selection of core beers will be available on tap, along with a rotating roster of seasonal offerings; which is where the true innovation can be found.  The brewery rolls out a new beer every few weeks, offering beer drinkers something new to taste, and constantly changing the conversation in craft beer culture.  Staying true to their passion for great ingredients, Andrew and Erica source grain and malt from small producers as much as possible, with boutiques such as Red Shed Malting providing the base for Andrew’s creativity.  Andrew also believes that Calgary’s water, with its high mineral content, is ideal for brewing.  Quality ingredients and attention to detail allow the beers to strike a balance between fresh and robust, and allow Andrew and Erica to support small business in their community. In addition to beer, Annex also creates a number of delicious non-alcoholic, ingredient-driven sodas, including a Ginger Beer and Root Beer.  The sodas are a staple inside and out of the tap room, with Eau Claire Distillery featuring the Annex Ginger Beer alongside the Prickly Pear spirit in its collaboration bottled cocktail, the EquineOx Mule.

Annex Ale Project is approaching its first birthday this May, with new things unfolding all the time.  Visit the brewery Wednesday through Sunday for a pint, a tour with Andrew, a chat with Erica, and to experience this unique segment of craft beer culture in Calgary.
