The catalyst for the creation of 4th Meridian Brewing Company began with a crash. The crash was in the form of the oil and gas industry’s decline of a few years ago. That was the industry that 4th Meridian owners Brad and Helen Hoffman, and her brother Edward James all worked in. Besides sharing an early career choice, they also shared a great enthusiasm for craft beer and a dream of starting a brewery of their own. The oil crash was just the spark they needed to create a family owned micro-brewery in Lloydminster. They took the name for the brewery from the borderline between Alberta and Saskatchewan that runs through the town.
So began the arduous task of building a brewery from the ground up. In September of 2016, they put together a 3.5 bbl brew house on an acreage owned by Brad’s parents. Edward took the reins as head brewer, having home-brewed for six years prior. Using plastic food grade fermenters and second-hand Grundy tanks, they soon had their first batch of beer and they’ve never looked back. In February of 2017, the owners decided to move their operation into the city. After six months of careful design and diligent renovations, they opened their taproom on August 3, 2017.
Their beer features locally grown hops and artisanal malts, all lovingly combine under the hand of Edward and his team. The brewery produces four core beers from the light and tangy Bachelor Blonde Ale to the robust and toasty Border Porter. Their seasonal Mango Saison recently won gold in the Farmhouse Beer category at the first-ever Alberta Beer Awards.
While there are no tours of the brewery available at this time, the taproom is open for business. The room features eight beers on tap. They’ve also recently added a cider to the line-up. A cozy, friendly atmosphere, the taproom is the ideal place to gather with friends and family to enjoy the latest batch of 4th Meridian beer. The room is kid-friendly, and even pet-friendly. While they do not have a kitchen at this point, the taproom is happy to host take-in food including anything from your own kitchen. The folks at 4th Meridian love supporting the locals. In the summer months it is not unusual to spot a food truck or two outside the brewery. So come on by, play some darts or a game of crib and fill up a growler or two of your favorite beer. Grab a toque or T-shirt from the gift shop to commemorate the visit. And don’t forget to bring back that growler.
