The Dandy Brewing Company is a “nano-brewery” that is on the rise in the Alberta micro-brewery scene. At Dandy, size matters. The smaller the better. Company founders Benjamin Leon and Dylan Nosal had been home-brewers for a few years before they began experimenting with larger batches of their favourite brews. Ben and Dylan had always enjoyed the rich and complex elements of proper British ales.
An old high school friend of Ben’s, Derek Waghray, joined the brewing process after completing a degree in chemistry. They soon began dreaming of growing their passion into a full time endeavour. What began as a home-brewing hobby grew into a full-fledged brewing operation by 2014.
The company built a custom brewery that could produce small, hand-crafted batches. They are recognized as the only “nano-Brewery” in Alberta. The fellas at Dandy Brewing feel their small size affords them an advantage. They can literally “micro-manage” every detail of the brewing process personally. There is no automation in the brewing process. Everything from combining ingredients to bottling is all done by hand. This ensures a high standard of quality and maintains their initial home-brewing philosophy. Their small size also allows them to experiment with unique new recipes. When it comes time to bottle, Dandy brewers carbonate their beer in a traditional way. Instead of forcing CO2 into their beer, they add fresh yeast to each bottle for natural carbonization. This also allows the beer to naturally carbonate. It also allows each bottle to be cellared, where the beer can continue to evolve over a longer period of time.
The brew masters at Dandy work locally with Alberta malters who source what they feel is some of the greatest barley in the world from Alberta Farmers. In addition, they use locally grown juniper berries and hops in their seasonal ales. Even their labels are designed by artist from the vibrant Calgary arts scene.
Dandy ales are available only in 650ml “bomber” bottles and small casks. They can be purchased at their off-sale shop located at the brewery. They are happy to show folks around. Contact the brewery directly via social media or e-mail to set up a visit.
