The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company is Canmore’s only brewpub. Situated on Main Street, it has become a destination for visitors to this picturesque Rocky Mountain town. Owner Niall Fraser was born in Scotland and raised in Edmonton. After studying hotel management in Switzerland, he travelled the world, working in the hotel industry. He returned to Canada with an idea to start up a brewery. After years of searching for the perfect location, he set up shop in Canmore. The brewery went on line on April 26th, 1996.

The brewpub catered to the tastes of locals and tourists alike. They brewed their first 200 litres from scratch, using wort from a company in England. By 1998, they were a full mash brewery. Soon they were canning their own beer - the first brewpub in Canada to do so. A bottling line soon followed. In 2004, the Grizzly Paw changed its license from that of a brewpub to a microbrewery. This allowed the brewery to sell its beer to outside businesses across the province. Soon its numerous beers and seasonal ales were available in liquor stores throughout Alberta.

By 2009, business was booming and a new fermenting room was built. Construction on an entirely new brewery was needed to keep up with demand. In 2011, ground was broken on a new facility. Production began in the new brewery in 2013. The 20,000 square foot included an all-new cold beer store.

All the Grizzly Paw Brewing Company’s beers are made from pure glacial Rocky Mountain water and locally sourced pale malts. They use Alberta honey for their Grumpy Bear Honey Wheat, and locally grown, fresh raspberries for their Beavertail Raspberry Ale. The Grizzly Paw has also been creating its own line of sodas since 2005. Using locally sourced ingredients, they are caffeine-free and low in sugar.

Visitors can tour the Grizzly Paw’s state of the art production facilities Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 1:00 pm, 2:30 pm, and 4:00 pm. It’s a chance to learn about the brewing process from malt selection to bottling. A tasting is included in the $15 price. Call ahead to book a spot or contact them online. Of course all are welcome to enjoy a varied menu in the casual timber and stone brewpub itself. Varied Canadian cuisine includes the Paw’s award winning burgers.
