Eau Claire Distillery was born out of the tradition of farming in Southern Alberta. David Farran, Larry Kerwin, and Brad Stevens are not only partners in the distillery, they are friends. They are also men with a keen undrerstanding of the farming history of Alberta. It is with a farmer’s stewardship of the land that they formed the principles of Eau Claire Distillery in the summer of 2014.
They chose the name Eau Claire, which means clear water. The fresh Rocky Mountain water used in their spirits is at the core of everything they do. Located in the heart of the picturesque hamlet of Turner Valley, Alberta, the distillery adheres to the 100 mile philosophy. Much of the grains for their spirits are sourced from local homestead farmers. But it is their unique “in-house” farming techniques that set Eau Claire Distillery apart from others.
What began as a weekend hobby for David Farran, has turned into a labour of love and an integral part of the Eau Claire Distillery. With the help of his team of plough horses, David “horse farms” many of the grains used in distillation, using farming practises that date back to the settlement of the province. This tradition helps maintain the artisanal quality of the distillery’s spirits.
The distillery unveiled its first spirit, Three Point Vodka in June of 2014. The name was inspired by Three Point Creek, a tributary that runs through David Farran’s fields. Beginning with the Rocky Mountain glacier waters, master distiller Larry Kerwin adopted their “grain to glass” approach of handcrafting small batches. The distillery followed up the success of their vodka with their Parlour Gin. This London dry style incorporates the usual Juniper berry and citrus qualities, while infusing unique notes of Rosehip and Saskatoon berry. Gin Rummy has arrived just in time for the holidays of 2014, with Rye Whiskey to follow in 2017.
The distillery set up shop in the historic Turner Valley Theatre, built in 1923. Today it houses their state-of-the-art, custom designed distillery. Visitors can tour the distillery and sample Eau Claire’s fine spirits in their newly completed tasting room. Please call them directly to book a private tour.
