The local food and beer movement go hand in hand. Blindman Brewery co-founder Hans Doef has experience in the business as one of the owners of Doef’s Greenhouses; the vegetable farm specialized cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, eggplant and tomatoes in Lacombe with stands in the Old Strathcona and 104th St. markets in Edmonton.
Doef became well aware of the growth in food interest through Doef’s Greenhouses and felt there was an opportunity to start the vibrant brewery he had always wanted in his hometown of Lacombe.
“With the whole local food movement expanding and people talking more about where their food is coming from, beer follows suit,” Doef said. “Breweries and the local food movement in general is a great place to make more than a business – a gathering place.”
Doef and his long-time friend and co-owner Dave Vander Plaat have always been interested in brewing. Earlier in 2015, three other people from Edmonton joined their team: Matt Willerton, who is currently at Alley Kat; Adam Campbell, who has experience in the brewing business with Grizzly Paw, Alley Kat and Propeller Brewing, and Kirk Zembal.
Blindman will begin brewing in the middle of August at their brand new brewing factory, and Doef hopes that their products will be available around the middle of September.
“We got our hands on some pretty cool hops,” an exciting Doef said. “We are trying to figure out what beer we want to make that will cater to the market and sell.”
Blindman will have three products by launch that remain nameless as of now: two hoppy and aromatic beers in their light session ale and stronger IPA, as well as a seasonal split batch of light and strong saison.
