Birds & Bees Organic Winery and Meadery was born out of a passion for agriculture, and a vision for diversification of the family farm. They have been producing orchard wines and mead since 2005. They remain Alberta’s first and only organic winery and meadery.

Victor and Elizabeth Chrapko began operating their family farm in the 1960s. Besides tending crops and keeping livestock, they planted fruit trees and kept bees. Victor had always been a “hobby” winemaker, making enough fruit wine for personal consumption. By the mid 1990s, they replaced their hogs with more fruit trees. They soon became Alberta’s first organic Apple orchard. Their family motto has always been, “leave the world a better place than you found it”. A holistic approach to agriculture lead to an abundance of premium fruit and honey. The family was sure this could lead to premium wines and mead. Victor and Elizabeth began working closely with the provincial government to make changes to regulations regarding fruit wines in the province. These changes would promote economic diversity and growth for the agriculture industry. After much dedication and hardwork, the Chrapko family was producing fruit wines for sale on their property. By 2009, their wines and meads were available at local farmer’s markets. By 2011, they sold directly to liquor stores and restaurants throughout the province.

The Chrapkos believe in diversification and sustainability. The farm and winery is a designated Certified Organic by the Organic Crop Improvement Association International (OCIA). The OCIA awarded them International Organic Farmers of the Year in 2009. They also won an Alberta Farmer’s Market Award in 2010. They bottle their product in light-weight, eco-friendly glass. They have done away with non-renewable corks, using quality screw caps for all their wines and meads.

The Chrapko family farms more than 50 acres of land, growing more than 1500 trees. They harvest Saskatoon berries, raspberries, sour cherries, pears, plums and 39 different varieties of apples. An abundance of this fine fruit makes its way into the wineries

Visitors can contact the winery directly to book a tasting and take advantage of special on-site pricing.
